Beauty of A Pentatonic Scale

A pentatonic scale is a musical scale with five pitches per octave in contrast to a heptatonic (seven note) scale such as the major scale. Pentatonic scales are found all over the world, including but not limited to Celtic folk music, Hungarian folk music, West African music, African-American spirituals, Jazz, American blues..

In this video legendary Jazz vocalist Bobby McFerrin demonstrates the power of the pentatonic scale, using audience participation, at the event “Notes & Neurons: In Search of the Common Chorus”, from the 2009 World Science Festival

Is our response to music hard-wired or culturally determined? Is the reaction to rhythm and melody universal or influenced by environment? Join  John Schaefer, scientist Daniel Levitin and musical artist Bobby McFerrin for live performances and cross cultural demonstrations to illustrate music’s note-worthy interaction with the brain and our emotions.

I listened to McFerrin sing everybody from Vivaldi to himself years ago, a complete orchestra with only his vocal chords…

one particular Vivaldi piece was so haunting i could never listen to it without welling up.

    Great clip Lao Aju…

P.s. “Lao Aju” better mean something good, after all that Nimesh calls you like this all the time!
